Tips for Bike Commuters
RIDE WITH A BUDDY
Find friends, neighbors or co-workers that have a similar commute route and ride together. Map your route and share it with friends here.
KEEP CLEAR OF CAR DOORS
Ride four feet away from parked cars, even if it means taking a whole lane of traffic. If you do get doored, be sure to file a police report. The motorist is at fault (Law: RCNY §4-12).
BE BIG IN INTERSECTIONS
Intersections are where most crashes occur. To avoid a crash, stay out of driver's blind spots, make eye contact and use your bell and lights to be noticed. When in doubt, go ahead and take a full travel lane to avoid any turning conflict.
USE HAND SIGNALS
With so many people vying for street space at intersections in NYC, hand signals are a great way to let drivers, pedestrians and other cyclists know where we are headed (Law: VTL §1237). Use your arms!
